Exploring the culture, food, and traditions of North Carolina

Is it time to hop back into the kayak yet?

I hope everyone is having a great start to their year! I am already dreaming of warm spring days, and summer nights. I know, I know… but winter is my least favorite season. I can’t help it.

Here’s a few things that caught my attention this week:

The cold is having an effect on everything!!! NC Division of Marine Fisheries just closed speckled trout until June of this year, after the cold weather stunned and killed quite a large bit of the population as I understand it. Closures and proclamations like this can always be a polarizing issue, but I am glad that our state is looking out for the future population, even though it means I won’t be landing any big guys (like in the picture to the left) for a while!

The town of North Wilkesboro officially proclaimed the 4th Saturday of January to be “Moonshine Heritage Day”! And it looks like the guys over at Copper Barrel are planning an event! I am excited to see what they come up with!

It’s a little delayed, but I have been loving Lynne’s Goodbye… the final show of Lynne Rossetto Kasper of The Splendid Table. It’s funny, heartwarming, and if you’re a foodie, it’s going to give you serious envy! Not familiar with The Splendid Table? Here’s an episode with Vivian Howard, one on North Carolina Dipped Fried Chicken (yum!), and  one on Kim Thompson, a miller at Carolina Ground.

And I’ll leave you with a video shot yesterday of my little coastal town in the snow! (My friends are the crazies doing the doughnuts in the car!) How cute is this? I love that my little southern town just had a blast in the freakishly unusual weather!
